A Small But Immense Pianist From Hong Kong

It may be some time until we hear another performance of Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No 3 quite like the one just given by little John Lee, who, faced with some of the most devilish pages of piano music ever composed, astonished us all.

His absolute control and unwavering technique, however difficult the piece, combined with elegance, natural phrasing, and just the right dose of Russian character, gave rise to a performance surpassing those which preceded (excellent though they were), and a standing ovation from a delighted audience.
